On the Nomination of Paul Chitwood as President of the IMB

After months of searching and prayer, the presidential search committee of International Mission Board has announced that they will be recommending Dr. Paul Chitwood as president.

It is not an understatement to say that the president of the IMB is the most visible and most significant individual in the SBC. His responsibility is to lead our international mission initiatives as well as beating the missions drum for all of our SBC churches. The SBC exists for missions, and therefore, the president of the IMB bears the weight of keeping us on point and moving ahead.

Because of these tremendous responsibilities, we want to encourage all Southern Baptists to commit to pray for Dr. Chitwood in the following areas.

1. His Walk with Jesus

Leading a multinational organization is complicated. Leading our International Board will be even more complicated because of the spiritual dynamics at play. Let’s pray that Dr. Chitwood maintains a deep and abiding relationship with Jesus to sustain and guide him as he leads Southern Baptists to push back the darkness and seen people brought into the Kingdom of God’s light.

2. His Walk with his Wife and Family

The power of the gospel can be seen in the strength and thriving of Christian families. Let’s pray that the pressures and the travel of the presidency are not used by the enemy to weaken the Chitwood family.

3. His Walk with Southern Baptists

Southern Baptists can be an odd lot. We are a passionate people and were are not known for being silent about our passions. As Dr. Chitwood leads the IMB, he will be responsible for relating to different groups within the SBC and to lead us all in the pursuit of our “One Sacred Effort.” Let’s pray that he will have the wisdom and grace to walk well among our convention of churches.

4. His Walk with IMB home office and field personnel

The primary responsibility of the IMB president is to lead IMB personnel. The needs of the home office and the field are not always the same. Dr. Chitwood is not a newcomer to this world, but his responsibility to motivate, minister to, and inspire these men and women is essential. Let’s pray that he will be able to lead this incredible staff (both at home and abroad) to greater heights of missionary effectiveness.

5. His Walk among those in the broader mission community

Southern Baptists do not have sole responsibility for the fulfillment of the Great Commission. The president of the IMB will be required to interact well with leaders and missionaries from around the world. As Southern Baptists, we know that the success of the mission involves cooperation within our convention. The same can be said for cooperation between those in the broader mission community. Let’s pray that he will be able to represent Southern Baptists well and will have the courage and creativity to work with others for the sake of God’s mission.

As the search committee brings him to the full board for approval, we owe the IMB, and Paul Chitwood our prayer and support. Click To Tweet

As Southern Baptists, we have been given a challenge — Make Disciples of All Nations. We have elected trustees to establish a structure for accomplishing this — as the search committee brings him to the full board for approval, we owe the IMB, and Paul Chitwood our prayer and support. From the Center for Great Commission Studies and from Southeastern Seminary, we make this pledge.
