North Carolina native and evangelist, the Reverend Billy Graham passed away at the age of 99. Known by many as “America’s Pastor,” the leading evangelist of the 20th century lived a life of purpose and influence. He traveled the world and preached to over 210 million people throughout his life. He met more living presidents than anyone else, and personally counseled at least a dozen, going back to Harry S. Truman. Graham championed the modern evangelistic crusade meeting by embracing the technology of his day–radio, television, and, later, the internet. Technology aided in getting his message out to a wider audience. By some estimates, over 2 billion people have been impacted by the ministry and message of Billy Graham. An impressive ministry for sure.
While impressive, Graham’s greater impact is felt in the legacy he leaves behind of an enduring commitment to Jesus, the Scriptures, preaching the gospel message, and his family. He faithfully proclaimed salvation in Christ alone through faith alone for over 70 years.
His life was not without challenge and struggle. Early in his career he had to make a decision about whether or not he fully believed the Bible he was preaching and the message of hope for humanity found in Christ alone. In August of 1949 at Forest Home retreat center in California, the young Billy Graham made the decision to preach Christ alone and based his convictions fully on the trustworthiness of the Bible. From that day forward his preaching and evangelism was clothed in conviction and the power of the Holy Spirit like never before.Rev.
