Man has two great spiritual needs:
One is forgiveness
The other is for goodness.
— Billy Graham —
When I encounter someone who’s life is falling apart, I can be so judgmental. They are lazy. They are immoral. They are irresponsible.
Rarely do I think – they are looking for God and haven’t found him yet.
Philosopher Blaise Paschal wrote: “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only God, the Creator, made known through Jesus.”
Because of sin, all humans experience emptiness. This emptiness is intolerable, so we seek to fill it with drink, sex, money, fame, recognition, relationships. . . None of this helps. All lead to further emptiness and brokenness. You and I encounter these broken, hurting, desperate people regularly. But, how many of us see them as Billy Graham suggests? We have the message of forgiveness and goodness. Let’s share it with those who most need it.
Compassionate Lord Jesus, I need your eyes so I can see the hearts and needs of people. I am too quick to judge and too arrogant to appreciate the pain of others. I want to love them as you do and I want to point them to you for forgiveness and goodness . . .
